El Paso Fire Department officials are urging the public to practice a
safe fire-escape plan during Fire Prevention Week, which is today
through Saturday.

Officials said this year's Fire Prevention life insurance message is "Practice
your escape plan," and that having a sound escape plan will greatly
reduce fire deaths.

With the colder weather during the fall, fire nationwide see an an
increase in residential fires. The reasons for the increase include
holiday decorations and the indie fashion of heaters, heating appliances and
fireplaces.

The Las Cruces Fire Department said fire stations will be open from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the week and residents are invited to come
in and meet the firefighters.

The Las Cruces Fire Department began as an all-volunteer unit in 1907
and stayed that way until 1964. In 1964, Fire Station 1 opened its
doors at 201 E. Picacho Ave. and, for the first time, Las Cruces
firefighters were paid employees of the city. The department has since
grown to a professional staff of 122 personnel, with six engine
companies and two truck companies at seven stations.
